High fashion x high tech: Prada and Axiom Space collaborate on NASA’s Artemis III moon mission spacesuit

2 min read

NASA’s Artemis III moon mission is scheduled to launch in 2025, and it will be the first crewed mission to the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. One of the most important pieces of equipment for the Artemis III astronauts will be their spacesuits, which it’s recently been announced are being developed by Axiom Space in collaboration with Prada.

“Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits,” Axiom Space CEO Michael Suffredini said in a statement.

With the Artemis III spacesuits set to disrupt the legacy suits used for many missions past, we expect to see a unique intersection of high fashion and high tech. We’ve seen plenty of space-inspired fashion throughout the years, from André Courrèges’ “Space Age” collection in 1964 to streetwear designers like Heron Preston incorporating NASA’s brand into their designs, but Prada and Axiom Space’s opportunity here is a unique one to create incredibly functional suits capable of protecting the astronauts from the harsh environment of space while also channeling Prada’s sense of high style to represent the cutting edge of fashion.

Because of this, the collaboration between NASA, Axiom Space, and Prada on the Artemis III moon mission spacesuit is an exciting example of how high fashion and high tech can come together to create something truly innovative. The spacesuits will not only protect the astronauts from the harsh environment of space, but they will also be a stylish and modern representation of the next generation of space exploration.

And can we also mention we think it would look great in orange? (Rendering from Midjourney.)
